June 22, 2025 — U.S. Outdoor Retail Sector — As summer adventurers take to trails, lakes, and mountain roads, men’s outdoor and adventure gear is enjoying a significant boost in sales across the United States. Retailers from California to the Midwest report a sharp uptick in demand for rugged, performance-oriented gear tailored to hiking, trail running, dual-sport riding, and other endurance activities.

The surge coincides with the return of large-scale outdoor events such as the Big Bear Run in Southern California and the Broken Arrow Skyrace in Tahoe, which have drawn thousands of participants and spectators alike. These high-profile events not only showcase the intensity of outdoor pursuits but also highlight the essential gear athletes rely on, from lightweight hydration systems to armored motorcycle apparel.

According to specialty retailers in adventure-focused locales like Big Bear Lake and Palisades Tahoe, the most sought-after items this season include GPS-equipped motorcycle vests, dual-sport jackets with abrasion resistance, and hydration belts tailored for trail runners. Technical layers, performance socks, protective gloves, and mobile power banks are also flying off the shelves, with customers prioritizing versatility and comfort for extended outdoor use.

“We’ve seen gear sales double compared to last summer,” said Erica Lyles, manager at a Tahoe-based outfitter. “Athletes want apparel that breathes, stretches, and protects—and they’re willing to invest in quality.”

Online retailers echo these trends. Platforms such as REI, Amazon, and Backcountry.com have reported spikes in keyword searches including “dual sport motorcycle jacket,” “lightweight trail hydration vest,” and “men’s performance base layer.” Social media has played a powerful role, as athletes share photos and gear recommendations from the trails and backcountry, sparking real-time interest and driving ecommerce traffic.

The broader outdoor gear industry is riding this momentum. According to market analytics firm OutdoorIQ, the men’s adventure-sports equipment segment is projected to lead summer retail growth across outdoor categories, with a projected 14% year-over-year increase. The growth is largely driven by rising participation in outdoor endurance events, combined with consumer preferences shifting toward experiences and wellness-related activities.

“Men are increasingly investing in gear not just for weekend hikes but for serious adventure and endurance sports,” said OutdoorIQ analyst Jonah Klein. “They want functionality, durability, and style—often all in one product.”

Events like the IRONMAN 70.3 Rockford and Big Bear Run exemplify this shift, as participants come equipped with highly technical gear that balances lightweight performance with protective features. Trail runners at the Broken Arrow Skyrace, for example, sported breathable apparel designed for vertical climbs, compression wear for muscle recovery, and energy gels housed in modular running belts.

Dual-sport riders at Big Bear favored armored jackets with integrated GPS slots and moisture-wicking liners—ideal for long days navigating mixed terrain. Many of these products, once considered niche, are now entering the mainstream as more consumers adopt active lifestyles.

The rise of hybrid work schedules has further enabled weekday exploration and local travel, prompting higher gear turnover among casual adventurers and seasoned athletes alike. This evolving consumer behavior supports a sustained retail trend, particularly as eco-conscious brands gain ground with sustainable materials and modular designs.

In-store and online promotions are capitalizing on the momentum. Retailers have launched “Adventure Ready” campaigns featuring gear bundles, training resources, and event tie-ins. Some stores even partner with local races to offer pop-up sales or gear demos on-site—bringing the shopping experience directly to the athletes.

As summer unfolds, the men’s adventure gear market shows no signs of slowing down. With more events on the calendar and increased social engagement highlighting gear performance in real-world conditions, the sector is poised for a record-breaking season.
