June marks the annual observance of Men’s Health Month in the United States, with Men’s Health Week taking place from June 9 to 15. This year, the campaign emphasizes mental health, aiming to address the silent crisis affecting men nationwide. Statistics reveal that men are nearly four times more likely to die by suicide than women, underscoring the urgent need for awareness and support.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), males accounted for nearly 80% of suicides in 2023, despite comprising about 50% of the population. This disparity highlights the critical importance of addressing men’s mental health issues.

Societal expectations often discourage men from seeking help for mental health challenges. Therapist Angela Thomson from Huron Behavioral Health notes that men are less likely to pursue treatment due to the stigma associated with expressing vulnerability. Symptoms such as irritability and anger may mask underlying issues like depression and anxiety, leading some men to adopt harmful coping mechanisms, including substance abuse.

To combat these challenges, various initiatives are underway during Men’s Health Month. For instance, NAMI Middle Michigan is hosting guest speaker Brandon Hillaker on June 9 to share his personal journey of overcoming mental health challenges. Hillaker plans to undertake a triathlon from Hell to Paradise, Michigan, to raise awareness about mental health.

Additionally, the Walk-A-Mile event in Big Rapids, organized by New Journey Clubhouse and Community Mental Health, is scheduled for June 12. The event aims to raise awareness about mental health and combat the stigma associated with mental illness. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with various community organizations and learn about available resources.

National organizations are also contributing to the cause. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is promoting Men’s Health Month by encouraging open conversations about mental health and providing resources to support those in need.

The emphasis on mental health during Men’s Health Month 2025 reflects a growing recognition of the unique challenges men face. By fostering open discussions and promoting preventive care, these initiatives aim to break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage men to prioritize their well-being.
