The Atlantic Coast Conference’s annual Football Kickoff continued Thursday, July 16, in Charlotte, North Carolina, placing six college programs before national and regional media as preparations for the 2026 season accelerate. Boston College, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Syracuse and Virginia Tech were scheduled for the second day of the three-day event at the Hilton Charlotte Uptown.
The gathering brings together every ACC head coach and more than 50 student-athletes from the conference’s 17 football programs. Live programming runs throughout the event, with press conferences, player interviews and analysis available across television and digital platforms.
Unlike a regular game day, ACC Kickoff is primarily a media and leadership event. Coaches explain their plans, players discuss preparation and analysts examine the changes likely to shape the coming season. For fans, it offers an early look at team identities, position battles and emerging leaders before preseason camps begin.
Six Programs Take Center Stage
Thursday’s group included several established teams facing important questions. Clemson arrived with longtime head coach Dabo Swinney and players Sammy Brown, Will Heldt and Olsen Patt-Henry. Louisville was represented by head coach Jeff Brohm, quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, defensive lineman Clev Lubin and offensive lineman Lance Robinson.
The day also featured Syracuse under Fran Brown, Georgia Tech under Brent Key and Boston College under Bill O’Brien. Syracuse selected quarterback Steve Angeli, linebacker Antoine Deslauriers and two-way player Demetres Samuel Jr. for the event.
Virginia Tech attracted particular interest because James Franklin is entering his first season as the Hokies’ head coach. The school selected defensive lineman Kemari Copeland, safety Tyson Flowers and running back Marcellous Hawkins to attend with Franklin.
Copeland led Virginia Tech with 4.5 sacks in 2025, while Hawkins produced 749 rushing yards and averaged 6.3 yards per carry. Their inclusion illustrates how preseason media events can spotlight experienced players expected to provide stability during a coaching transition.
Leadership, communication and preparation become especially important when a new staff is installing its systems and establishing expectations. The players chosen to attend conference media days are often those expected to set standards inside the locker room and represent the team publicly.
Boston College also brought a combination of returning leadership and new personnel. Quarterback Mason McKenzie joined the Eagles after three seasons at Saginaw Valley State, where he recorded more than 4,300 passing yards and 31 touchdown passes. Safety KP Price returned after leading Boston College in tackles for two consecutive seasons and earning second-team All-ACC recognition in 2025.
Georgia Tech’s delegation consisted of Key, linebacker Kyle Efford and running backs Justice Haynes and Malachi Hosley. The university scheduled appearances across national, regional and local broadcasts throughout Thursday, reflecting how the Kickoff has developed into more than a sequence of formal press conferences.
Programs now use the event to reach supporters through television, radio, digital platforms and social media. This expanded coverage allows fans to hear directly from coaches and players while giving schools an opportunity to introduce new leaders and promote their plans for the season.
A New Scheduling Era Raises the Stakes
The 2026 season carries additional significance because the conference is beginning its move toward a nine-game league schedule. Twelve teams will play nine ACC games this season, while Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina will remain on eight-game conference schedules because of previously arranged nonconference commitments.
To account for that temporary imbalance, the conference announced a revised championship tiebreaker policy on July 15. Head-to-head results will receive priority, and teams are not expected to be disproportionately rewarded or penalized because they played eight or nine league games.
When direct competition cannot separate tied teams, the strongest overall body of work will be considered. Conference officials reviewed thousands of simulated season outcomes while developing the system.
The policy is intended to determine which two teams reach the ACC Championship Game while accounting for the unusual scheduling transition. Beginning in 2027, only one conference member per season is expected to play an eight-game ACC schedule under a rotating arrangement.
The expanded schedule could create more high-profile conference matchups and reduce the margin for error during the regular season. Teams with championship ambitions will need depth, consistency and strong preparation to manage a demanding series of league games.
What Fans Should Watch Next
The final day of ACC Kickoff is scheduled for Friday, July 17, featuring California, Duke, North Carolina, Pitt, SMU and Wake Forest. After the event, attention will shift toward preseason camps and the first games in late August and early September.
For college football followers, media days provide an early framework rather than final answers. Coaches’ comments can reveal priorities, and the selected player representatives often identify likely team leaders. However, depth charts, strategies and starting roles may continue changing throughout camp.
Thursday’s sessions nevertheless marked a meaningful step toward the return of football. By bringing six programs together for interviews, analysis and public discussion, the ACC Kickoff gave fans a clearer picture of the personalities, expectations and structural changes that will define the conference’s 2026 season.
