Laredo’s ‘Trim the Stigma’ Event Champions Men’s Mental and Physical Health
LAREDO, Texas — On June 26, the City of Laredo Public Health Department hosted “Trim the Stigma,” a community-centered event aimed at promoting men’s mental and physical well-being. Held at the Immaculate Cut Barber Institute on Cedar Avenue, the initiative offered free haircuts, health screenings, and employment resources, aligning with Men’s Health Month to encourage men to prioritize their health and dismantle associated stigmas.
The event was a collaborative effort between Laredo Public Health, Workforce Solutions for South Texas, and local businesses. Attendees received complimentary grooming services, including haircuts and beard trims, courtesy of the Immaculate Cut Barber Institute. Headmaster instructor Norma Jeane emphasized the importance of self-care, stating, “We’re offering haircuts and beard trims for Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month,” and highlighted the institute’s barber training programs and teen initiatives.
In addition to grooming services, the event featured a mini job fair organized by Workforce Solutions for South Texas. Employers such as G.O.P. Importing and Exporting, Entrusted Pediatric Home Care, and Taco Palenque were present, offering positions ranging from data entry clerks to licensed vocational nurses and restaurant crew members. Krystal Karolina Ramirez, Business Service Representative for Workforce Solutions, noted the significance of providing employment opportunities as a facet of overall well-being.
Health services were also a focal point of the event. Laredo Public Health’s hepatitis C coordinator, Eleazar Lumbreras, provided free screenings and emphasized the importance of early detection. “We offer free hep C screenings, and for people who come out positive, we help uninsured and insured patients get the treatment they need for free,” Lumbreras explained. He highlighted that many individuals may be unaware of their hepatitis C status due to the disease’s asymptomatic nature in its early stages.
The event’s holistic approach to health aligns with Laredo Public Health Director Richard Chamberlain’s advocacy for daily self-care practices. “We want to ensure longevity and vitality by taking simple steps every day by investing in our mental and … ,” Chamberlain stated. He underscored the importance of integrating mental health awareness into daily routines to foster a healthier community.
“Trim the Stigma” also served as a platform to address the broader issue of mental health stigma among men. By combining services that cater to physical appearance, health screenings, and employment, the event aimed to create an environment where men feel comfortable seeking help and discussing mental health concerns.
The success of the event reflects a growing recognition of the need for accessible health and wellness resources tailored to men’s unique challenges. By offering a space that combines practical services with health education, “Trim the Stigma” represents a step forward in promoting comprehensive well-being within the Laredo community.
