Des Moines Launches ‘Miles for Men’s Health’ Initiative to Promote Preventive Care

DES MOINES, Iowa — In a concerted effort to address mens health disparities, Des Moines has unveiled a new initiative titled Miles for Mens Health. Announced on May 31, 2025, this program aims to encourage men to engage in preventive healthcare through community fitness events. Organized by the team behind the IMT Des Moines Marathon, the initiative features 5K and 15K races scheduled for November 16, 2025.

The Miles for Mens Health event is more than just a race; its a platform to raise awareness about the importance of regular health check-ups and screenings among men. Statistics have shown that men are generally less proactive about their health, often neglecting preventive care and early detection measures. By combining physical activity with health education, organizers hope to foster a culture where men prioritize their well-being.

Event director Jake Jass emphasized the significance of creating accessible opportunities for men to learn about and take charge of their health. Mens health is often overlooked, and this race is part of an effort to get people moving, talking, and creating a culture to change that, Jass stated in a press release.

The races, named The Handlebar 5K and The Imperial 15K, are set to take place at 1007 E Grand Ave, Des Moines, IA. Participants can expect a day filled with not only physical activity but also opportunities to engage with health professionals and access resources related to mens health. The event is designed to be inclusive, welcoming seasoned runners and newcomers alike.

Proceeds from the races will support local health organizations that provide services to underserved male populations. Additionally, the event aligns with the broader Movember movement, which focuses on raising awareness for mens health issues such as prostate cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention. By participating in Miles for Mens Health, individuals contribute to a cause that impacts countless lives.

Registration for the event opened on May 31, with early bird discounts available through the end of June. Interested participants can sign up for the races and find more information on the official event website.

The Miles for Mens Health initiative represents a proactive step by the Des Moines community to address health disparities among men. By integrating fitness, education, and community engagement, the program seeks to empower men to take control of their health and well-being.
