Lionel Messi’s Future with Inter Miami: What to Expect

Lionel Messi’s ongoing relationship with Inter Miami continues to dominate soccer discussions, especially as he approaches the end of his current contract. Co-owner Jorge Mas revealed in a recent interview that talks regarding Messi’s future with the club are actively taking place.

Messi’s Impact on Inter Miami

Since joining Inter Miami in 2023 after his illustrious tenure at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and his iconic years with FC Barcelona, Messi has significantly influenced Major League Soccer (MLS). The Argentine forward, a World Cup champion in 2022, has netted 40 goals in 47 appearances, spearheading his team’s victory in the Leagues Cup and adding an MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2024.

Contract Negotiations

Messi’s contract is set to expire at the end of this season; however, with plans for a new stadium set to open in 2026, anticipation grows that he will extend his stay in Miami. In an interview with Andres Cantor ahead of a crucial match against Los Angeles FC, Mas expressed his optimism regarding Messi’s future, stating:

“My expectation is that we will see the team’s captain and number 10, Lionel Messi, in the new stadium. It’s a decision. We are talking with him about his future at the club.”

Legacy and Future Prospects

Mas further elaborated on the discussions surrounding Messi, indicating that a decision is likely to emerge in the next 60 to 90 days as planning for the future becomes crucial:

“All the stars are aligning for really great things, a beautiful future for the club and for Lionel. It’s up to him, but I anticipate we will determine this in the next 60 or 90 days because it’s important to start planning ahead.”

Moreover, Mas highlighted Messi’s aspirations beyond playing, noting that the superstar desires to remain involved with the club as an acting shareholder to establish a legacy for his children.

Potential Return to Argentina?

Though there has been speculation about a potential return to his boyhood club, Newell’s Old Boys, the likelihood of such a move has decreased with ongoing talks for an extension with Inter Miami. As Messi approaches his 38th birthday in June, staying in the United States aligns well with the upcoming 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

Convenience of Staying in the U.S.

Remaining in the U.S. would provide logistical advantages as Messi prepares to defend Argentina’s title in the World Cup. Notably, the Argentina national team uses Miami as its training base during competitions, and the Argentina Football Association established a local office in the Wynwood area in 2023, further solidifying this connection.

As negotiations progress, Messi’s future with Inter Miami seems promising, with prospects for both the player and the club looking bright.
