Former LSU Wide Receiver Kyren Lacy Dies at Age 24

In a heartbreaking development, Kyren Lacy, a former wide receiver for Louisiana State University (LSU), has passed away at the age of 24. This news comes from an official confirmation by LSU to CBS Sports on Sunday. Lacy’s death occurred amid a series of legal challenges and troubling incidents, highlighting a tragic end to a promising athletic career.

Details of the Incident

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Houston, Texas, police were called to respond to a disturbance involving Lacy. Reports indicate that a conflict with a family member escalated, leading Lacy to allegedly discharge a firearm into the ground. By the time law enforcement arrived at the scene, Lacy had reportedly left. Authorities were able to trace his vehicle, which resulted in a pursuit that extended over several miles.

The pursuit ended when Lacy’s vehicle crashed. Upon approaching the wreckage, officers discovered that Lacy had succumbed to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Reactions and Statements

In the wake of this tragedy, an LSU spokesperson expressed condolences, stating, “We’re saddened to learn of the tragic passing of former LSU Football student-athlete Kyren Lacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones, as well as his former teammates and coaches impacted by his passing.”

Legal Challenges Prior to Death

Lacy’s death follows several serious allegations that had recently been brought against him. Earlier in January, he was arrested and faced charges including negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run resulting in death, and reckless operation of a vehicle. These charges stemmed from a collision on December 17 that tragically resulted in the death of a 78-year-old man and injured two others.

A news release from the Louisiana State Police detailed the accident, explaining that Lacy was driving recklessly when another vehicle attempted to avoid a collision but ended up in a head-on crash with another car. Following the incident, Lacy left the scene without rendering aid or contacting emergency services.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

A grand jury was set to review evidence regarding Lacy’s negligent homicide case soon after his death. Lacy’s attorney, Matthew Ory, issued a statement following the incident, expressing concerns about the investigation process, describing it as “an overzealous, targeted effort.” Ory pointed out that, to date, Lacy had not been formally charged by the Lafourche Parish District Attorney.

A Brief Football Career

Kyren Lacy had previously played for the University of Louisiana-Lafayette before transferring to LSU. During his time at LSU, he emerged as a standout player, finishing his collegiate career with impressive statistics: 162 catches, 2,360 receiving yards, and 26 touchdowns.
