As Men’s Health Month 2025 unfolds, health professionals across the United States are emphasizing the importance of annual medical checkups for men. This national observance, held every June, aims to raise awareness about preventable health issues and encourage early detection and treatment of diseases among men and boys.

Lesley Jimenez, the statewide wellness coordinator for the Texas Department of State Health Services, underscores that Men’s Health Month is not solely about physical health but also encompasses mental and emotional well-being. “By taking proactive steps, men can improve their overall health and well-being,” Jimenez stated, highlighting the multifaceted approach needed to address men’s health comprehensively.

The Importance of Annual Checkups

Regular health screenings are vital in detecting conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes at an early stage. Early detection allows for more effective management and treatment, reducing the risk of severe complications. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), men are less likely than women to visit a doctor for regular checkups, often leading to late diagnoses of potentially serious health conditions.

Statistics reveal that only about 60% of men undergo yearly checkups, with nearly 40% waiting until a health issue becomes serious before seeking medical attention. This delay can be detrimental, as men have a 41% higher overall mortality rate than women and die at higher rates for eight out of the ten leading causes of death, including heart disease, cancer, and stroke.

Mental Health: An Integral Component

Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being that is often overlooked among men. Approximately 31% of men will experience depression during their lifetime, yet many do not seek help due to stigma and societal expectations. Only 9% report symptoms of depression or anxiety, and of those, just a quarter are willing to speak to a mental health professional.

Addressing mental health is essential, as untreated conditions can lead to severe consequences, including suicide. Men die by suicide at a rate nearly four times higher than women, highlighting the urgent need for open dialogues and accessible mental health resources.

Prostate Health and Cancer Screenings

Prostate cancer remains a significant concern, being the second leading cause of cancer death among men in the U.S. Early detection is crucial, with a 99% five-year survival rate when diagnosed early. Men are encouraged to discuss prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing with their healthcare providers, especially if they have a family history of prostate cancer or are over the age of 50.

In addition to prostate screenings, men should also be vigilant about testicular health. Testicular cancer is the leading cancer in men aged 15–44, and regular self-examinations can aid in early detection and treatment.

Lifestyle Modifications for Better Health

Beyond medical checkups, adopting a healthy lifestyle plays a pivotal role in disease prevention and overall well-being. Regular physical activity, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress management are fundamental components of a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Christopher Romero, an internal medicine specialist with Valley Baptist Health System, emphasizes that even modest increases in physical activity can lead to significant health improvements, including reduced risk factors for stroke, diabetes, and heart disease.

Community Initiatives and Resources

Various organizations and healthcare providers are offering resources and events to promote men’s health during June. For instance, the Gift of Life Men’s Health & Prostate Cancer Screening event in Lumberton, Texas, provided free primary care tests, prostate cancer screenings, and physician consultations to over 130 men. Attendees also received meal boxes and gift cards, emphasizing the importance of holistic care and community support. The event is part of a larger “Summer of Screening” campaign, with additional events planned in Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange.

Nationally, the Men’s Health Network (MHN) is spearheading efforts to raise awareness and close the lifespan gender gap through empathy and action. Their initiatives include educational campaigns, policy advocacy, and community engagement activities designed to promote preventive care and early detection of health issues. MHN’s Director of Communications, Jennifer Thompson, emphasizes the importance of collective responsibility in supporting men’s health, stating, “We believe in a world where supporting men’s health is seen not as a competing cause, but as a shared responsibility.”

Taking Action

Men are encouraged to take the following steps to prioritize their health:

  • Schedule regular checkups and screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and cancer.
  • Engage in regular physical activity, aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.
  • Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
  • Prioritize mental health by seeking support when needed and engaging in stress-reducing activities.
  • Avoid tobacco use and limit alcohol consumption.

By taking these proactive steps, men can significantly improve their health outcomes and bridge the lifespan gender gap. Men’s Health Month serves as a reminder that health is a lifelong commitment, and early action can lead to a longer, healthier life.
