The University of West Florida (UWF) men’s golf team captured the 2025 NCAA Division II National Championship, marking their first title since 2008 and the third in program history. This victory is a monumental achievement for the Argonauts, as they outperformed several strong competitors to secure the championship at the prestigious event held at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Under the leadership of veteran head coach Steve Fell, UWF demonstrated incredible skill, determination, and teamwork throughout the tournament, ultimately clinching the victory in a dramatic playoff finish.

The championship match itself was a tense and closely contested affair, with both teams trading shots throughout the final round. As the match neared its conclusion, the score was tied at 2.5 to 2.5. This set the stage for a nerve-wracking finish. Inclement weather interrupted play, leading to a four-hour delay, but the Argonauts were undeterred. Once play resumed, senior Fabian Wennerlof, who had been solid throughout the tournament, stepped up under pressure. Wennerlof won his match on the 18th hole, securing the final point and sealing the victory for UWF. His composure and performance were a fitting end to a thrilling match, and his teammates rushed to celebrate as the Argonauts were crowned champions.

Throughout the season, UWF had shown their ability to perform under pressure. The team began their championship campaign with a dominant victory at the Matlock Collegiate Classic, where they finished 11 strokes ahead of the competition with a remarkable team score of 27-under par. This victory set the tone for the rest of their season, with the team continuing to build momentum. The Argonauts’ consistency and depth were evident as they advanced through regional competitions, where they placed third at the South/Southeast Regional Championship, earning them a spot in the national championship tournament.

Individually, UWF’s players earned recognition for their exceptional performances. Six members of the team—Per Ekelund, Eddie Lee, Mason Minkel, Cooper Tendick, TJ Thompson, and Fabian Wennerlof—were named to the 2025 NCAA Division II PING All-Region Team. This recognition highlighted the depth of talent on the team and underscored the collective strength that propelled UWF to victory. These individual accolades also reflected the program’s broader success, with each player contributing to the overall success of the team throughout the season.

The 2025 championship victory marks a significant milestone in the history of UWF men’s golf. It not only adds to the program’s illustrious legacy but also reinforces its growing prominence in collegiate golf. The Argonauts’ triumph is a testament to the program’s commitment to excellence, as well as the hard work, resilience, and dedication displayed by both players and coaching staff. Under Coach Steve Fell’s leadership, the team has become a powerhouse in Division II golf, and this victory cements their place among the elite programs in the country.

As the team celebrates this historic achievement, their focus remains firmly on the future. The 2025 NCAA Division II Championship victory is a testament to the program’s trajectory, and UWF’s players and coaches are already setting their sights on maintaining their success and continuing to build on their legacy. With their sights set on more championships, the Argonauts are poised to remain at the forefront of NCAA Division II men’s golf for years to come.
