Serena Williams Takes a Step into Basketball as Toronto Tempo Co-Owner
Tennis icon Serena Williams has officially joined the ownership group of the Toronto Tempo, a new WNBA franchise that will commence play in 2026.
Partnership with Kilmer Sports Ventures
Williams teams up with Larry Tanenbaum, chairman of Kilmer Sports Ventures, in this transformative venture. In her announcement, Williams expressed her excitement about this role, emphasizing its significance beyond sports. “This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes – I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity,” she said.
A Personal Connection to Canada
Despite her roots in Michigan and Compton, California, Williams has a deep affection for Canada. Her career began in 1995 at the Bell Challenge in Quebec City when she was just 14 years old. Though she faced defeat in that match against Annie Miller, this was just the beginning of a remarkable journey that saw her achieve milestones such as winning 23 Grand Slam singles titles and 14 major doubles titles before she retired in 2022.
Roles and Contributions with the Toronto Tempo
As part of her new role, Williams will contribute to designing team jerseys and collaborating on unique merchandise initiatives. Teresa Resch, president of the Tempo, highlighted Williams’ influence, stating, “She’s the greatest athlete of all time, and her impact on this team and this country is going to be incredible.”
Inspiring Future Generations
Resch further acknowledged Williams’ legacy: “She’s set the bar for women in sport, business and the world — and her commitment to using that success to create opportunities for other women is inspiring.” The announcement arrives ahead of International Women’s Day, underscoring the timely message of empowerment and opportunity for women in sports.
