This election is significant as it marks the first time a U.S. Cardinal has assumed the papacy. Cardinal Prevost, originally from Chicago, also holds citizenship in Peru, where he has dedicated many years to ecclesiastical service.

Prior to his election, Prevost served as the head of the Dicastery for Bishops, playing a crucial role in the selection of bishops globally. In his inaugural speech, he also honored his predecessor by acknowledging “the weak but always courageous voice of Pope Francis,” highlighting a continuity of values and mission within the Church.

Pope Leo XIV’s election comes after more than a century since the last Pope Leo, Leo XIII, who served from 1878 to 1903. Leo XIII was renowned for his contributions to Catholic social teaching, particularly with his 1891 encyclical addressing the societal impacts of the Industrial Revolution.

Cardinal Prevost’s choice to adopt the name Leo XIV may signal his intent to focus on similar social justice issues as part of his papacy.
