The Kings League, an innovative seven-a-side football competition founded by former Spanish international Gerard Piqué in 2022, is preparing to bring its dynamic format to the United States by 2026. CEO Djamel Agaoua announced the ambitious expansion during an event in Paris, indicating that the U.S. launch could commence on the East Coast as early as late 2025 or early 2026.

Known for its fast-paced matches and unconventional rules, the Kings League has rapidly gained popularity among younger audiences. The league’s matches are streamed on platforms like Twitch and YouTube, attracting a digital-savvy fan base. With existing leagues in countries such as Italy, Germany, France, and Brazil, and plans to launch a Middle East and North Africa (MENA) league in partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the Kings League is expanding its global footprint.

The league’s unique format includes features like “President Penalties,” allowing club presidents to participate in penalty shootouts, and “secret weapons,” which introduce unexpected twists during matches. These elements have contributed to the league’s appeal, particularly among viewers under the age of 35, who comprise approximately 85% of its audience.

Financially, the Kings League has secured significant investment to support its expansion efforts. In 2024, the league raised €60 million from investors, including Left Lane Capital and Fillip, to fuel its growth into new markets. The anticipated investment for each new market ranges between €5 million and €7 million, with higher costs expected for the U.S. launch due to its scale and potential.

Despite the emergence of rival leagues like the Baller League and ICON League, Piqué remains confident in the Kings League’s unique offering and its ability to captivate audiences. He cites the league’s rapid growth and strong digital presence, with over 7 billion social media impressions and 400 million engagements, as indicators of its success.

The Kings League’s expansion into the U.S. market represents a significant step in its mission to revolutionize football entertainment. By combining elements of traditional football with innovative gameplay and digital engagement, the league aims to attract a new generation of fans and redefine the sports viewing experience.
