June 1, 2025, heralded the commencement of Men’s Health Month across the United States, spotlighting the theme “Close the Lifespan Gender Gap by Addressing the Empathy Gap.” Spearheaded by the Men’s Health Network (MHN), this annual observance aims to raise awareness about the physical, mental, and social health challenges that men face, encouraging communities, employers, and organizations to participate in educational events and health screenings throughout the month.

Addressing the Lifespan and Empathy Gaps

The 2025 theme underscores two critical issues: the lifespan gender gap and the empathy gap. Statistically, men in the U.S. have a life expectancy approximately six years shorter than women, a disparity largely attributed to preventable health issues, delayed medical care, and higher rates of suicide and workplace fatalities. The empathy gap refers to the societal tendency to minimize or overlook men’s health struggles, leading to fewer resources and less public awareness.

“Improving men’s well-being is not optional—it’s essential,” stated Jennifer Thompson, MHN’s Director of Communications. “This month, we’re focused on empathy, outreach, and education. We believe in a world where supporting men’s health is seen not as a competing cause, but as a shared responsibility.”

Nationwide Initiatives and Events

Throughout June, MHN is coordinating a series of events and campaigns to promote proactive healthcare measures among men and boys. One of the most visible initiatives is “Wear Blue” Day, celebrated every Friday in June, where individuals are encouraged to wear blue to raise awareness for men’s health issues. Participants can also host events, share information on social media using hashtags like #ShowUsYourBlue, and distribute educational materials.

American Men’s Health Week, observed from June 9 to 15, coincides with International Men’s Health Week and includes Father’s Day on June 15. This week focuses on key advocacy goals such as driving policy changes to better support men’s and boys’ health, increasing funding for gender-specific research, and promoting proactive healthcare.

Corporate and Community Engagement

Organizations across the country are joining the movement. Endo, Inc., for instance, has launched a Men’s Health Month initiative that includes digital outreach, educational materials in healthcare settings, and participation in Wear Blue Day. The company’s efforts aim to empower men to take charge of their physical, mental, and sexual health, addressing commonly underdiagnosed and stigmatized conditions.

In Southeast Texas, the nonprofit organization Gift of Life is offering free men’s healthcare screenings throughout the summer, starting with a major health fair on June 7 at the Lumberton Performing Arts Center. These screenings, valued at over $500, include tests for prostate cancer, cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar, along with consultations with doctors and additional incentives.

The Importance of Mental Health

Mental health is a significant focus of this year’s Men’s Health Month. Men are nearly four times more likely to die by suicide than women, highlighting the urgent need to address mental health stigma and provide support. Organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) emphasize that mental well-being is as crucial as physical health, advocating for open conversations and accessible resources.

Encouraging Proactive Health Measures

Men’s Health Month serves as a reminder for men to prioritize their health through regular check-ups, screenings, and healthy lifestyle choices. By addressing both physical and mental health concerns, the initiative aims to foster healthier communities nationwide.
