Investigation into the Tragic Death of Miller Gardner
On March 21, during a family vacation in Costa Rica, Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees player Brett Gardner, tragically passed away. In the wake of this incident, Costa Rica’s Ministry of Health has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his untimely death.
Cause of Death Determined
Officials confirmed on April 2 that Miller’s death was attributed to carbon monoxide exposure, as indicated by the presence of carboxyhemoglobin in his bloodstream. This compound forms when carbon monoxide is inhaled, interfering with the body’s ability to carry oxygen.
Details of the Investigation
Health Minister Mary Munive Angermuller stated that the Ministry is thoroughly examining the conditions at the Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort, where the Gardner family was staying. Angermuller emphasized the importance of understanding how lethal carbon monoxide levels could accumulate in the air of the premises.
“The Ministry of Health is… investigating what happened at a hotel in Manuel Antonio following a report by the Judicial Investigation Agency which indicates the unfortunate death of a person due to carbon monoxide inhalation,” Angermuller reported.
Initial Theories Dispelled
Initially, there were concerns that Miller may have suffered from food poisoning, as several family members reported severe stomach issues on the night before his passing. However, post-mortem examinations revealed no major respiratory abnormalities, ruling out asphyxiation as a cause of death. On March 21, the entire Gardner family had sought medical attention after experiencing severe symptoms.
Despite earlier claims by the resort that carbon monoxide levels were nonexistent, the investigation aims to clarify the circumstances leading to this tragic event.
Family’s Heartfelt Tribute
In a statement issued on March 23, Brett and Jessica Gardner expressed their profound sorrow, stating, “Miller was a beloved son and brother, and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile. He lived life to the fullest every single day.” They have requested privacy as they navigate their grief and seek healing.
