Eddie George Appointed Head Coach of Bowling Green State University
Bowling Green State University has announced the hiring of Eddie George as the new head coach for its football program. This marks a significant step in George’s coaching career, as it represents his inaugural role at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level following four seasons at Tennessee State University.
George’s Commitment to the Bowling Green Community
Expressing his enthusiasm, George stated, “I am truly excited to be the head coach at Bowling Green State University. Bowling Green is a wonderful community that has embraced the school and the athletics department. We are eager to immerse ourselves in the community and help build this program to the greatness it deserves.” He also emphasized his joy in returning to Ohio, where he excelled during his college football career.
Background and Previous Coaching Tenure
George takes the reins from former coach Scot Loeffler, who has transitioned to a role with the Philadelphia Eagles as a quarterbacks coach. Under Loeffler’s leadership, Bowling Green posted an overall record of 27-41 over six seasons and achieved successful bowl appearances in the years 2022 to 2024.
In his recent tenure at Tennessee State, George’s coaching significantly progressed, culminating in a career-best record of 9-4. This season’s highlights included a shared title in the Big South-Ohio Valley Conference and participation in the FCS playoffs. Notably, George improved the team’s performance each year, with the Tigers achieving a 6-5 record in 2023.
Coaching and Athletic Achievements
Beginning his coaching journey in 2021 with Tennessee State, George encountered early challenges as the team experienced losing seasons. Nonetheless, the last two years marked a turnaround, reflecting George’s ability to lead and inspire his players effectively. Fifteen of his 24 coaching victories came during this resurgence, demonstrating notable momentum in conference play.
Before transitioning to coaching, George established himself as a standout running back, first at Ohio State University and later with the Tennessee Titans in the NFL. He earned recognition as a member of the 2011 College Football Hall of Fame, amassing 3,768 rushing yards and 44 touchdowns during his illustrious college career. George’s impact also extended to the professional level, where he was selected by the Titans with the 14th overall pick in the 1996 NFL Draft, securing multiple Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors throughout an eight-year career.
