Bill Murray Reflects on Emotional Moments from SNL’s 50th Anniversary Celebration
Emotional Journey
During the recent celebration marking the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live, actor Bill Murray experienced profound emotional moments, revealing that he was moved to tears multiple times throughout the program.
Bill Murray’s Insights on Sway in the Morning
In an appearance on Sway in the Morning, a SiriusXM radio show, Murray shared his unexpected emotional response, stating, “It was surprisingly emotional. I wept three times in the show. It really got to me.” This reaction stemmed from his deep-rooted connection with the influential variety show, where he was a cast member from 1977 to 1980.
Memories of Gilda Radner
One particular moment that struck Murray was a video tribute featuring the late Gilda Radner and Steve Martin. He reminisced, “There was Gilda up there dancing with Steve Martin and I remember being there, watching them rehearse that dance number for days and days and days. I love Gilda, I was crazy about Gilda. And I sort of came apart.” He described feeling overwhelmed with emotion while reflecting on their shared history.
Honoring John Belushi
Further discussing the weight of nostalgia, Murray spoke about his late fellow comedian John Belushi, who passed away in 1982. He recalled an iconic sketch where Belushi humorously visited the SNL graveyard to find his deceased castmates. Murray poignantly noted, “meanwhile John’s the first one to go… John was a guy who really made a lot of careers possible. He dragged all of us out from Chicago.”
